Methods
Development of the intervention strategy summaries involved: Evidence Identification, Evidence Review and Abstraction, and Resource Identification.
Evidence Identification
Initially, a comprehensive literature search for review articles related to the identified contributing factors was conducted. Selected articles were reviewed and outlined. Articles selected were those that appeared to be the most relevant for practitioners, with a preference for systematic reviews and documents that represented expert consensus opinion. References from these review articles/documents were obtained when clarification or additional detail was needed. A list of intervention strategies was generated from this review along with supporting evidence from the literature.
Evidence Review and Abstraction
The evidence available for each intervention strategy was then reviewed and practice-relevant information abstracted and summarized in an intervention strategy template. The template identifies the basic information required for assessing the applicability and effectiveness of each intervention strategy. All intervention strategy summaries were submitted to multiple reviews by experts in the field of obesity prevention.
Resource Identification
Resources provide users with practical examples, assistance, and support for implementing each strategy. Potential sources include, but are not limited to, government agencies, university programs, national organizations and coalitions, and model programs as detailed by referenced review articles. In addition, selected resources:
- are available free of charge, easily accessible, and clear for users;
- were developed or administered by a respected source; and
- are either generalizable to various communities and populations or specific to certain groups of people.
