WISEWOMAN™ Program
Well Integrated Screening and Evaluation for Woman Across the Nation

CDC launched the WISEWOMAN program in 1995 to help financially disadvantaged and uninsured women gain access to screening and lifestyle interventions that can reduce their risk of heart disease and other chronic diseases. Today the program provides low-income and uninsured women between ages 40 and 64 with chronic disease risk factor screening, lifestyle intervention, and referral services. In 2007, CDC funded 15 WISEWOMAN projects that operate on the local level in states and tribal organizations. Projects provide standard preventive services including blood pressure and cholesterol testing, as well as programs to help women develop a healthier diet, increase physical activity, and quit using tobacco.

Women who are eligible for the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (NBCCEDP) are also eligible for WISEWOMAN. The established NBCCEDP framework provides the opportunity to target other chronic diseases among women, including heart disease, the leading cause of death among women.

The WISEWOMAN and the Obesity Prevention program fund the Center of Excellence for Training and Research Translation. The following WISEWOMAN staff members work closely with Center TRT investigators and staff to advance the Center’s mission:

  • Julie Will, PhD, (WISEWOMAN Team Lead) - advises across the project.
  • Charlene Sanders, MPH, RD - collaborates on Center TRT training.
  • Ryan Loo, PhD - collaborates on intervention research translation.

The WISEWOMAN program is administered through CDC's Division for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention. For more information about the WISEWOMAN program, please go to www.cdc.gov/wisewoman.

Nutrition and Physical Activity Program to Prevent Obesity and Other Chronic Diseases

CDC’s Nutrition and Physical Activity Program to Prevent Obesity and Other Chronic Diseases (Obesity Prevention program) funds 28 state health departments to develop and implement evidence-based nutrition and physical activity interventions. In the short term, Obesity Prevention aims to: 1) help states make concrete changes to local policies and environments that increase everyone’s access to nutritious foods and places to be physically active, and 2) educate individuals and families on the importance of nutrition and physical activity, giving them the tools and skills to make changes in their own lives. In the long term, Obesity Prevention and its funded states will build on these changes to ultimately reduce the prevalence of obesity and other chronic diseases in targeted communities.

The funded states use an integrated planning approach, one that examines each social, scientific, and environmental factor affecting the obesity epidemic as part of one, interconnected system. States partner with government, academic, and private-sector stakeholders to create statewide health plans that leverage existing resources and create sustainable ways to prevent and control obesity and other chronic diseases.

Using a social marketing approach, states promote the five strategies proven to prevent and control obesity: balance caloric intake, increase physical activity, increase consumption of fruit and vegetables, decrease TV viewing time, and increase breastfeeding. The states also are working to reduce soft drink consumption and portion sizes.

The Obesity Prevention program and the WISEWOMAN program fund the Center of Excellence for Training and Research Translation. The following Obesity Prevention staff members work closely with Center TRT investigators and staff to advance the Center’s mission:

  • Claire Heiser, MS, RD – collaborates on Center TRT training
  • Diane Thompson, MPH, RD - collaborates on intervention research translation
